The artificial nature of the constructed landscapes on either side of the underpass are highlighted by the presence of a new, inverted ‘landscape’ drifting across the ceiling. Long before the development of this new neighborhood, and before it was a bustling international airport, this particular corner of the Denver metropolitan area was covered in sand dunes. The slow, shifting transformations of the dunes were the inspiration for this project. of weathered steel fins that are suspended from a new hotel entryway. The sculpture aims to explore the relationship between natural, geological formations and human-made structures. The weathered steel fins represent the erosion and weathering of rocks, while the geometric shapes and patterns in the sculpture mimic the formations found in nature. The point of departure for this system is the gyroid, a triply-periodic minimal surface structuring two twisting columns of space. The design algorithm relies on the trigonometric approximation of the Gyroid’s mathematical definition: sin x cos y + sin y cos z + sin z cos x = 0 The smooth digital surface is reduced from pure data into a low-resolution, collection of planar surfaces for fabrication. Sparked by Professor Oakland’s efforts, the bill became a law in 1971. As a result, Oregon has some of the most bicycle and pedestrian friendly towns and cities in the nation. This installation honors these efforts to improve the quality of Oregon’s built environment for all of its citizens.Bike Bill was created as part of ‘The Art of Loving Oregon’ program to commemorate the Oregon Environmental Council’s 50th anniversary and their important legislative accomplishments during that period. The figure of a bicycle rider moving through space is rendered by a grid of pipes marking the limits of a field of vectors passing through the person and their machine. The design explores the digital scanning of objects, and the sampling of geometric data to create an abstract, digitally controlled representation of a dynamic event. The panels mark a boundary condition between a pedestrian patio and busy arterial roadways. The square fields are modulated by contrasting frequencies emanating from either side. The resulting figures shift as the opposing patterns visually interfere. The simple, primitive act of stacking wood, a utilitarian, space-making impulse, is given new expressive potential by forming a complex, computationally generated figure. The toroid is a shape resembling a torus that, in this case, is formed by twisted elliptical profiles around a central column of space.The object’s perceived shape shifts significantly as visitors move through the adjacent lobby space. Walking a closer elliptical orbit around the Toroid reveals a variety of relational effects generated as the structural wood lattice intersects the boundary of the toroid’s surfaces. The blue figures extruded from the surface appear to hover in the middle of an enlarged space like a mirage.
