faceted gyroid
Faceted Gyroid translates a mathematical formula into a physical object using digital algorithms. The point of departure for this system is the gyroid, a triply-periodic minimal surface structuring two twisting columns of space. The design algorithm relies on the trigonometric approximation of the Gyroid’s mathematical definition:
sin x cos y + sin y cos z + sin z cos x = 0
The smooth digital surface is reduced from pure data into a low-resolution, collection of planar surfaces for fabrication. Two Faceted Gyroid’s were commissioned for the Wilsonville Festival of Arts.
